Preliminary interns learn about common medical problems as well as medical emergencies. At the completion of the internship, preliminary interns have had adequate patient exposure to sharpen their physical diagnosis skills and to develop patient assessment skills and clinical judgement.

Applicants interested in one year of Internal Medicine training prior to a specialty residency may enter Washington University’s preliminary year program. The preliminary internship is similar to the categorical program and includes experiences in the following areas:

  • Internal medicine wards
  • Emergency medicine
  • Night float
  • Medical Intensive Care Unit

There are also electives that can be used to prepare for specialty residency or to expand one’s knowledge of internal medicine or other disciplines.

Neurology Applicants

Applicants planning a three-year Neurology program elsewhere are welcome to apply to the Medicine Preliminary Year at Washington University via the standard ERAS application process.
